Estimating Measurements

Landscapers are often required to make surface area estimations when estimating the size of interior floors, exterior yard space, etc. Here is the square footage of some common spaces.

TIP: A standard sheet of paper is 8.5″ x 11″, which is just 1 inch shy of a foot. Therefore, holding two sheets of paper so that they overlap in an L shape, gives you an area of 11″ x 11″ or almost 1 sq ft. That’s almost the size of a large (1 ft x 1 ft) floor tile.

Square Footage

Larger Spaces

  • Basketball Court = 4,700 sq. ft.
  • Baseball diamond = 8,100 sq. ft. (90 ft x 90 ft)
  • 1/4 Acre = 10,890 sq. ft.
  • 1/2 Acre = 21,780 sq. ft.
  • 1 Acre = 43,560 sq. ft.
  • Football Field = 57,600 sq. ft. (includes 10 yard end zones)

Smaller Spaces

  • Twin bed = 20.3 sq. ft. (6.3 ft x 3.2 ft)
  • Pool table = 32 sq. ft. (8 ft x 4 ft)
  • Queen bed = 33.4 sq. ft. (6.7 ft x 5 ft)
  • King size bed = 42.2 sq. ft. (6.7 ft x 6.3 ft)
  • Ping Pong table = 45 sq. ft.(5 ft x 9 ft)
  • Sedan/SUV = 75 sq. ft. (15 ft x 5 ft)
  • 1 car garage = 240 sq. ft. (20 ft x 12 ft)
  • 2 car garage = 400 sq. ft. (20 ft x 20 ft)
  • 3 car garage = 600 sq. ft. (20 ft x 30 ft)

Habitat for Humanity ReStore

The San Diego Habitat for Humanity operates three stores in the greater San Diego metro area. When we visited, we were told by a contractor who frequents the store, that the inventory can change dramatically from one day to the next and the prices are negotiable so come often and don’t be afraid to speak up if something doesn’t seem to be priced right.

Donations are accepted at all three locations up until one hour prior to closing. They also operate an online store at shopsandiegorestore.org where some items can be purchased so that someone doesn’t nab the item you’re looking at before you can get their to pick it up.

Some pictures from our visit follow, but here are their locations, hours, and phone numbers as of the time of this writing.
